Maintain a healthy smile

Hygiene appointments can help prevent gum disease and decay, showing you how to keep your teeth and gums healthy. A professional clean from a hygienist can help remove any build-up of plaque and tartar from your teeth, protecting your smile from bacteria. Our hygienist is passionate about the prevention and treatment of gum disease and keeping your smile in top condition.

What is gum disease?

If build-ups of plaque on the teeth aren’t removed, the bacteria it carries can cause the gum tissue to become irritated. The gums then appear red and inflamed, a telltale sign of the early, reversible stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis. Other symptoms include bleeding gums when brushed, sensitivity and bad breath.

Hygienists can help reverse gingivitis by removing the plaque and tartar build up, removing the bacteria and allowing the gums to return to their healthy state.

If left untreated, gingivitis can cause the gums to begin to recede and create pockets between the gums and the tooth, allowing plaque to form on the tooth root. This condition is known as periodontitis, which is not reversible but can be controlled. If not managed, it can eventually lead to tooth loss.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?

A dental hygienist appointment is different to a check up with your dentist, and is there to help you maintain excellent oral health between your routine examinations.

Initially, our hygienist will ask a few questions about your medical and dental history and if you have any concerns with your teeth. This ensures the appointment is tailored to your needs.

The main bulk of the appointment is a scale and polish – a thorough, professional clean of your teeth to remove any tartar and plaque build up, along with any surface stains. Your teeth will feel smoother and cleaner immediately.

Your hygienist will also provide advice and information on how to care for your teeth and gums to keep them healthy at home. Some patients will have a hygiene appointment once or twice between check ups, and others will attend more regularly. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the best course of action for you.

Airflow treatment for stain removal

Brilliantly white and beautiful teeth are in high demand, with the rise of social media influencers and celebrities sharing increasingly perfect smiles.

While whitening works in some cases to remove stains and create a polished smile, it can’t always be used effectively on heavily stained teeth. We are able to help with Airflow, a revolutionary new treatment.

Airflow treatment works by using a jet spray technology, pushing out water, bicarbonate and compressed air to gently remove yellow, brown or grey stains on the teeth. The spray ensures that even hard to reach areas can be accessed and effectively treated. The procedure is pain-free and lasts for around 30 minutes, allowing you to leave with brighter, healthy looking teeth you can be proud of after just one visit.
