Relieving pain by removing infection

We want to save your natural teeth wherever possible and prevent the need for extraction. Sometimes, the soft tissues within your tooth, known as the pulp, can become infected due to decay, trauma or gum disease. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, preventing the infection from spreading and causing further problems to your dental health.

What does root canal treatment involve?

Root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful, but the procedure is no more uncomfortable than having a normal filling, and provides relief from your tooth pain. The treatment usually requires several appointments, depending on the type of tooth being treated.

An initial x-ray helps us check the root canals and look for any signs of infection in the surrounding bone.

We will place a rubber sheet around your tooth to keep it dry during treatment before removing the infected pulp. We use local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort.

We will then flush the root canals with an antibacterial solution, shape the canals and flush them through with an antibacterial solution. The cleaned root canals are then filled to prevent bacteria from entering and sealed with a permanent filling. You may need a crown to help restore tooth shape and functionality, but this varies from case to case.

If looked after properly, with an excellent dental hygiene routine and regular dental check ups, your root canal treated tooth should provide a long-lasting repair with no issues.
